Freeze

It was very cold last night, and we got hit with some unusually cold weather, it probably was in the mid to high 20's and unfortunately killed all of the plants that I had put in my garden. But I cannot complain because one of our farmers here in Shibinai lost his whole field of Asparagus. WOW!! All of that work for nothing, but he is not the only one, all over Hokkaido it happened and it was all over the news.

Asparagus prices are going to be through the roof. Right now Asparagus is about $4 for a bundle of about 6 Asparagus. I love it, but not for that price.

My plants were only 88¥ each that is a little less than 88 cents each, so I was not out much money, 88¥ X 6 about $5. I am told to wait a few more weeks to make sure all of the real cold weather is gone.

Masani san gave me a miniature green house for my garden, it will help to extend the short growing season that we have here in Shibinai, it basically consists of strips of bamboo stuck into the ground, covered in plastic. It is a very common thing to do here.

Koby's school also has a big field that they use to grow vegetables, and they asked us if we would like some of the field to use also. Yasuko told them yes, so now we have even a bigger plot to grow vegetables. I am going to have to add a lot more items to my garden now.
